EMP Engineering Services offers infrared thermography inspection services to clients for a wide range of applications.  Infrared thermography allows the user to 'see' heat by converting infrared radiation into visible light.  This heat can reveal abnormalities ranging from loose electrical connections to clogged cooling tubes to trapped moisture and failed insulation.

Key Benefits of Infrared Inspections

bulletCost reduction through the early detection of problems such as bad connections and blown coils.
bulletImproved efficiency through the identification of wet insulation or cracked refractory.
bulletReduced downtime through increased equipment reliability and availability.

EMP Infrared Inspection Capabilities

EMP Engineering Services uses a Land TI-35+ thermal imaging system to inspect and document thermal conditions.  This fine instrument is complemented with WinLIPS processing software.  WinLIPS allows us to prepare detailed reports including isotherms, average temperatures and thermal histograms.  The TI-35 can also record data to a VCR so that time-varying phenomena can be observed and recorded for viewing on a television.

Electrical transmission and Distribution Inspections
Faults in transmission and distribution lines and equipment usually have symptoms that result in temperature changes long before they fail.  A loose or corroded connection will warm up as contact surface area goes down and arcing goes up.  Turn-to-turn shorts in coils result in localized heating.  Bound contacts cause their operating coils to overheat due to excessive current draw.  These are a few examples of the types of problems that can be found in transmission and distribution lines before they cause a failure.  EMP has inspected transmission and distribution systems from 132 KV on down.  We also have substantial experience with DC systems including plating operations.

Problems are reported using thermographs and photographs, with a location, problem description and recommendation included.  A summary of problems is then provided to the customer by hard-copy or delivered via the internet in a pdf format or both.

Furnace and Refractory Inspections
Industrial furnaces usually have refractory block insulation to reduce heat loss.  Damaged refractory can be readily identified with an infrared inspection.  Periodic inspections provide valuable information to make timely decisions about when to shut down a process for maintenance.  EMP inspects furnaces for many clients on a regular basis.

Roofing and Building Envelope Inspections
Built-up roofs will trap moisture either in the insulation or on top of the decking.  An infrared inspection of the roof will provide an extremely cost-effective means of identifying such moisture without expensive and damaging core sampling.  EMP has extensive experience with built-up roofs in industrial, commercial and office building applications.

We can also perform building enclosure inspections to confirm the status of insulation and to find fenestration points.  As with all of our infrared services, results are documented (including photographs and thermographs) and provided to the customer.  This allows building services providers to quickly and easily identify problem areas and address them with the appropriate party.
