EMP Engineering Services motor test and evaluation covers motors of all types
and sizes. By understanding the condition of motors and ensuring that they
are operating in the most economically efficient mode possible our clients
realize significant gains to their bottom line.
Key Benefits of Motor Testing
 | Cost reduction through the early detection of problems such as weak
insulation and open connections. |
 | Improved efficiency through diagnosis of adverse factors affecting the
dollar cost of operation. |
 | Reduced downtime through increased equipment reliability and availability. |
EMP Motor Testing Capabilities
EMP Engineering Services offers test and evaluation services using equipment
and practices blend the cutting edge of technology with time-tested practices
used by OEMs and major motor users.
- MCE Testing
- There are many motor tests on the market today. These tests assess
various electrical parameters of the motor and use that assessment to
predict the motors health. EMP Engineering Services has found that the
Motor Circuit Evaluation (MCE) by PdMA provides the most accurate and cost
effective means of accomplishing this assessment. The MCE measures
insulation resistance (megger), capacitance-to-ground, circuit inductance
and circuit resistance on a standard test. The insulation resistance
and circuit resistance are also temperature corrected to allow trending and
comparisons to IEEE recommended criteria. MCE testing monitors the condition of a motor
by periodically measuring these parameters.
-
- In addition to the standard test, the MCE can also be used to measure
Polarization Profiles (PP) and Rotor Influence Coefficients (RIC).
-
- An insulation system polarizes if potential is left on it for an
extended period. As noted by James Biddle three quarters of a century
ago, the insulation resistance should rise as this polarization takes place.
A failure to rise or periodic discharging are causes for concern. The
PP shows this in a graphical format.
-
- The RIC is intended to identify problems in the magnetic circuit,
an area that is overlooked in most motor tests. This will identify
broken rotor bars, shorted laminations and faulty amortisseur windings.

- DC and Synchronous Motor Testing, Set-Up and Evaluation
- EMP Engineering Services also offers a wide range of services for DC
motors and generators, Synchronous motors
and other large electrical equipment. This includes troubleshooting commutation problems, high voltage insulation
resistance testing and erection/rip-out supervision services.
Our technical staff has significant experience in these areas and our
copyrighted software helps us provide customers with the finest installation
and troubleshooting support available.
